Statement of Interest for NSA Board

My name is Teresa Quay and I have been an active member of NSA for several years, having participated in the Emerging Leaders Program a few years ago and offering my assistance with furthering that program afterward. I make use of many of the valuable resources NSA offers to members, including discounts, Tax Talk and Tax Talk Live and organizers, samples and toolkits on the website. I’ve been interested in being a part of the leadership team for some time, but when I was working full-time it was just not possible to be on the Board. Now, I am finally working my way toward retirement and would love to be able to provide feedback and leadership to the team!

I am a skilled leader, with strong organizational skills and a commitment to helping make things happen, both as an individual and as a member of a team. I started my practice forty years ago and have carefully cultivated it over the years so that now I have both a valuable set of clients, and a good employee team in place. This allows me to continue to work as I wish, but also to turn over much of the day to day to my internal team, especially outside of tax season. I’ve had lots of handson experience running all aspects of a small office, including doing much of my own IT work and hiring, training and empowering employees, both my own and those of clients I’ve worked with. Being directly involved in the purchasing and installation of most of our equipment and learning to troubleshoot both hardware and software has provided me strong analytical skills and a “get-itdone” attitude toward everything that I tackle in life.

I’m dedicated to helping make sure that NSA continues to be a successful organization as a resource for accountants, EAs and unenrolled tax practitioners. I’ve belonged to many other organizations and never felt like I truly get my money’s worth as I do with NSA every year. Our place in this changing universe is an important one and I’m excited to potentially offer input and feedback as a member of the NSA Board of Directors.

Statement of Interest

My name is Randy L. Brandt and I am submitting a request for consideration to run for an at-large position on the board of directors of the National Society of Accountants. I am currently concluding a
two year term in this current position and I have a desire to continue to serve the NSA in this capacity.

Throughout the past two years, the NSA has undergone many changes. Depending on whom you speak with some of the changes were viewed positively while other changes were viewed negatively. In either case, it is truly hard to judge the effect of a change without the benefit of a period of time to consider the consequences of the change. It is also difficult to build momentum for any change without consistency and continuity being poured into the efforts behind the change. Recognizing this, I believe that it is important that the board of directors of the NSA contains some new members to bring fresh ideas and energy to the board, but it is also important that the board maintain some members who have been involved with some of the more recent changes. The experience and knowledge that I have acquired while serving on the NSA board over the past 22 months will be a valuable asset to the Organization as it proceeds forward.

Consistency, communication, and a vision for the future are attributes that are critical to a successful Organization. My experience working in public accounting for the past 27 years has played a key role in developing and refining these skills. My involvement on the board the past two years has provided an opportunity to forge and develop relationships with other NSA leadership team members and with the new CEO of the Organization. Additionally, being actively engaged in board meetings and committee meetings has provided a fuller, deeper understanding of the inner workings and the more detailed aspects of what it will take for the NSA to achieve their stated goals. To take this knowledge and experience and step away at this time would feel like an opportunity lost for both the Organization and
myself. I have no doubt that someone with equal or better skills could fill this role; however, the learning curve of that individual would need to be repeated. While the need for change is always present, the need for consistency and experience is of equal value. I believe that I could continue to fill an important role within NSA by bringing knowledge and experience back to the board for the next two years.

Therefore, I respectfully request your consideration and support as I submit my name as a nominee to serve as an at-large director for the National Society of Accountants. I recognize the value that this
Organization has to those serving in the accounting and tax preparation fields and I desire to see its continued success into the future. This can only be done through the efforts of professionals like myself who are willing to contribute and serve as best they can and I am willing to continue to do so for the NSA.

STATEMENT OF INTEREST

I would like to continue serving on the National Society of Accountants Board of Directors as I feel it is a good fit for me and I enjoyed being a part of this body. NSA has been a big part of my journey as an accountant. I have served on several committees over the years for NSA and feel that serving on the board this past year has been an honor. I would like to serve on the board for another and feel that I can offer something to NSA going forward.

I started my journey in this industry as a teenager working for my parents. (That was back when I thought I knew more than my dad.) Just over 20 years ago we discovered The National Society of Accountants and I have been a member ever since. NSA has since played a vital role in my professional development. Particularly in my early years I silently followed Tax Talk trying to soak up as much information and learn as much as I could. It was there that I learned how to research. Researching the citations and not simply accepting the commentary or opinions given has been what has fueled my growth.

Now it’s my turn to give back to the organization that has helped me get to the place I am now.

I have been active in NSA since my IRS departure; first as a member, then on the Board. I have served on boards for credit unions, churches, and other non-profits. I have also recently served on the IRS Advisory Council and currently on the Taxpayer Advocate Panel. These have common themes of providing oversight and guidance to something bigger than ourselves that furthers the organization mission.

The tax profession has numerous complexities and with each session of Congress and State legislatures the complexity grows. I believe NSA provides a quality voice both upward and outward. The upward component is engagement with tax administration. This includes speaking into IRS legislation and operations for the membership to provide influence and practical input to tax administrators. My 30+ year career with the IRS provides me with valuable insights into how the IRS functions and how to best influence the system. I have supported this in recent years by serving on the Federal Tax Committee of NSA, serving on IRSAC, and engaging with the National Public Liaison. The outward voice is the information and education provided to the members. This includes newsletters, legislative highlights, and the various forums / communities where members exchange information and ideas. I consistently share my experience and expertise through the discussion boards and supporting webinars and townhall meetings. I also teach numerous CE events both live and via webinars for groups across the country.

As a Board member I would strive to support the NSA staff and membership that provides enhanced tax administration by working both upward and outward. In a collaborative effort, we can continue to make NSA a formidable industry force.
